One event from childhood strongly influenced the formation of my relationship with nature. Once I went to pee in the Tisa. When grandfather saw that, he strictly told me that it must not be done because we drink that water. And we really drank it. With a small barrel, which was called lajtar, one would go a little further into the water, fill it, and that was drunk. Imagine my shame that I went to pee in the river. That lesson remained as a base from which my relationship towards ecology and the environment later branched out. Perhaps that is where my great love for flowers and lack of understanding for those who can trample them comes from.

This moving story centres on a grandfather’s lesson about keeping the river clean because “we drink that water,” instilling a lifelong ecological conscience in the narrator. It recalls a time when river water was safe to drink, highlighting the drop in water quality over time. The narrative serves as a powerful example of intergenerational learning and environmental education, building a deep sense of human-nature coexistence and responsibility.
This story exemplifies values promoted by the GreenComp framework. It highlights the goal of the Drinking Water Directive and WFD to protect water sources. The shift from drinkable water illustrates degradation the Green Deal aims to reverse.
Intergenerational storytelling workshops can share environmental changes. Water quality monitoring projects allow citizens to compare current parameters with historical memory. River clean-up actions can be inspired by such stories. Eco-Schools programs can integrate local values. Oral history recording can document traditional practices.
