The Danube is alive. It is a river that has a soul, that knows how to think, and that sometimes knows how to be stubborn. Many injustices are done to it, and pollution affects it especially. Once the Danube flowed where the Seminary is today, through Karlovci itself. Over time, the bank began to crumble and the main current moved to the side towards us. That became dangerous because the river threatened to carry away part of the town, since Karlovci in that market area is like an amphitheatre. Citizens of Karlovci then bought four old ships, so-called šajke, loaded them with stones and earth, and sank them along the bank. Only when they did that, the main current hit the obstacle and went to the other side.

Giving the Danube a “soul,” this story describes a historical engineering project where old ships were sunk to divert the current and save the town of Sremski Karlovci. It illustrates the use of traditional ecological knowledge in managing river connectivity and freshwater ecosystems. The narrative also mourns the pollution that affects the river today, calling for greater respect and water quality protection.
The sinking of ships is a historical measure, though modern directives require soft engineering. The removal of sunken ships is a current issue addressed by EU-funded projects. The personification of the river aligns with the Rights of Nature movement.
Underwater archaeology can study these vessels. Sustainable sediment management addresses erosion. River restoration allows natural migration. Pollution monitoring campaigns engage citizens. Educational boat tours can tell the story of the river.
