The rhythm of nature

From this perspective, when I can observe five generations of my family, from my grandmother’s stories to my view on life and my grandson, I see that our relationship towards the Danube bank is not going in a good direction. There is a great ignorance of nature and a desire to appropriate, possess, and tame something. People try to put nature under rules that often make no sense. The other side cannot oppose words, but it has its own rhythm. I think a big problem arises when those rhythms come into discord. People are not aware of this because they don’t bond with nature. Bonding with nature mitigates changes in living conditions and helps us understand important things in life.

Reflecting on the human relationship with the Danube, the narrator questions the desire to “tame” nature and suggests a deeper bonding with its rhythms. The story promotes human-nature coexistence and environmental education, suggesting that understanding and respecting the river’s natural flow is crucial for climate change adaptation. It argues for a shift in perspective from control to partnership with the natural world.

This narrative aligns with the philosophy of nature-based solutions advocated by the European Green Deal. It critiques traditional grey infrastructure in favour of working with nature. The GreenComp framework emphasizes embodying sustainability values.

Nature interpretation programs can focus on sensory connection. River schools can teach the rhythm of the river. Restoration projects that remove concrete banks restore natural dynamics. Mindfulness in nature workshops can be offered. Arts and culture projects can explore this relationship.
