It is known that during the time of the Turks, when they attacked with the intention of conquering the fortress and continuing their campaign towards Vienna, Eugene of Savoy surrounded the Turkish army right below the Petrovaradin Tekije. There they got stuck in deep mud and mire. There are legends that during that retreat they left gold and weapons, and even today people find all sorts of objects in that mud. It is interesting that the battle took place on August 4th and 5th, when the Turkish army was defeated. Today that date is celebrated as Our Lady of the Snows. Legend says that snow fell then. Probably real snow didn’t fall, but there was some unusually heavy rain or hail, and the ground was already swampy anyway.

Mixing history and legend, this story links the Battle of Petrovaradin with a weather miracle – a summer snowfall credited to Our Lady of the Snows. The narrative explores folklore and oral tradition, connecting the historical event to the cultural landscape of the Danube floodplain. The mention of the swamp where the opposing army was trapped highlights the historical water layout of the area, touching on themes of water quality protection and wetland history.
The site is a major cultural heritage site, relevant to cultural routes. The swamp aspect links to historical wetland loss and potential wetland preservation. EU cohesion funds often support the restoration of such monuments.
Heritage interpretation at the site can combine military history with environmental history. Cultural tourism itineraries can link this site with other fortresses. Digital storytelling can visualise the battle and legend. Pilgrimage routes promote slow tourism. Wetland restoration in the vicinity could interpret the historical landscape.
