Dodole

When the rains stopped in May and drought set in, dodole went through the village. These were girls dressed in elder leaves so that only their heads could be seen. They sang dodole songs praying to God to send dewy rain: “My dola prays to God, oj dodo oj dodole, let dewy rain fall on us, oj dodo.” The host would then come out and gift the dodola with bread or bacon, and then he would pour water on her. That ritual was a plea for saving the crops from drought.

Describing the dodole ritual, where girls dressed in leaves would dance and sing to ask for rain during droughts, this story presents a community’s traditional response to climate change adaptation. It highlights human-nature coexistence through ritual performance and communal participation, preserving specific oral traditions and songs that were once vital for the community’s agricultural survival.

The preservation of such customs is part of the EU’s cultural heritage agenda. UNESCO recognises similar rituals. These are re-interpreted as evidence of historical climate resilience. Projects explore such intangible heritage.

Revival of rituals in cultural festivals can be supported. Anthropological research can document variations. Climate education can use the ritual to discuss drought responses. Intangible heritage inventories can include such practices. Artistic re-interpretation can engage modern audiences.
