We would immediately ride our bikes to the Drava River. The area by the Drava is called ‘Drugi most’ (Second Bridge). The Drava was nearly 500m wide there and had accessible banks. There was sand. On this sand and in the shallow water, we sunbathed, played picigin (a ball game), played football; it was paradise on earth. Every day during the holidays (‘ferije’) – to the Drava. When we were in the upper grades of primary school, we would go to the Drava for several days in the summer. We built ourselves a small hut in the middle of the Drava. The hut was made from surrounding trees, mostly alder and poplar, from which we built a sturdy structure. A fire burned 24 hours a day from wood we gathered, to drive away mosquitoes. We caught fish there and lived off that for four or five days. We lived like the Robinsons.
