The people of Čurug would take a boat on the Tisa to Slankamen, pick up passengers in Slankamen, then go to Surduk, and stop again. It couldn’t stop in Belegiš because the Danube is far from the bank. They stopped in Banovci because the village is right on the bank. Novi Banovci, Batajnica – it didn’t stop, they are also far from the bank. My mother is from Stari Banovci, and my grandmother told me that she used to go to the market in Zemun. The espal (market stall goods) that was for trade, she would wait for the white boat that started from Čurug. It arrived somewhere early in the morning. The Zemun market is near the Danube, and there they could bring out their goods and sell them. They’d buy what they needed – this was during Austria-Hungary – and then return to their village. … That ship left Čurug around midnight, arriving at the market in the morning. Around noon the market would finish, they would handle what they had bought, then the ship would leave in the afternoon, and before midnight, it would arrive in Čurug.
