The most interesting are the stories of the German officer Franz Stefan Engel, who wrote about the Military Frontier during the Austro-Hungarian period, about the border guards, their customs, and, among other things, about fishing on the Danube. Fishing on the Danube was widespread then because the border guards were given the opportunity to fish for free so they could feed themselves and engage in less idleness and drunkenness. They were also given opportunities to engage in silkworm breeding. Engel, in his writing, writes about hunting beluga sturgeon, which, of course, is no longer in the Danube since the dam at Đerdap was built. Beluga sturgeon used to, according to his records, come all the way from the Black Sea to Petrovaradin and Novi Sad to spawn. Everyone thinks the sturgeon only spawned around Kladovo, which is not true; it came all the way to Novi Sad.
