My fondest childhood memories are tied to the Drava river. We walked for kilometers to the river almost every day to swim. That was our greatest joy. The Drava had four watermills; people would bring corn and grind it. I remember watching the miller pour the grain between the stones and give the flour back to the people. Today, the Drava is completely different – there is a large hydroelectric power plant, embankments, deep lakes, and swimming is prohibited. There are no more mills, nor that childhood joy. When I think about it, I feel lost, as if a piece of my life has disappeared. I miss the carefree feeling and the joy of swimming in the river the most, which no longer exists today.
