Here by the Danube in Čortanovci, there was a mine from which coal was loaded mostly directly onto ships. And then the steamships would adjust their schedule to stop by, to load coal for fueling those steam engines on the ship. A brickmaker from Pančevo, some Milanović, had a brickyard in Pančevo, and he would come by ship for coal to Čortanovci. He’d load coal here and then they’d let him go downstream, and then he’d enter the Tamiš river to his brickyard. So, the people from Banat baked bricks with coal from Čortanovci. And the coal appeared because the Danube, with its high and low water levels, eroded the bank. A landslide happened, the water shifted, and coal appeared. How else would they have known we had it?
