First, I would say that the Danube usually flooded in the spring. In June, or already in May, it was known to flood. And there were meadows there. Now that has completely changed. Now there isn’t a single meadow, nor is there a need for meadows. I remember, as a child, that all our people from Petrovaradin had a few cows, they had horses for work; there were no tractors, of course. And so everyone cultivated their meadows, mowed them regularly. … When the river flooded, that was the spring May waters, when the fish were spawning. And it was interesting that many people from Petrovaradin had special, we called them ‘poklapači’ (cover nets), so when it flooded, there were whitefish spawning, especially carp. And people would go, mostly at night, into those meadows with those ‘poklapači’, which had wire or mesh around a 4-meter pole, and they would watch where the carp was moving, how it moved the reeds and bulrushes, in the dark and moonlight so it couldn’t be seen. Because then the fish can’t see either. I remember, my father used to go, and I went with him a few times, and we would bring home carp of 3-4 up to 5-6 kilos. That was a feast at home. Normally, it was forbidden, but it was tolerated.
