Ever since the time of Maria Theresa, embankments or dolme (levees) were built. Where the bank isn’t protected, like this right bank by Fruška Gora, on the other side is a lowland. Both Bačka and Banat are lowlands. Every municipality in the time of Maria Theresa had the task of raising a defensive barrier or embankment to kota 800 (elevation mark 800), as it had not been recorded until then that a high water level of the Danube crossed that mark and flooded the fertile fields, hundreds of thousands of hectares. The Danube, in the spring months, when the snows melt up north and when it swells, would flood, and all of Bačka and Banat would be under water. It destroyed enormous fields, crops, there was wheat, corn. Only the Titel Hill would remain. For low waters, the story repeats. For a few years, it’s normal, then one year it’s very low, the next year again a high water level.
