Today, on 21 May, we celebrate the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. Established by the United Nations, this day serves as a reminder that our diverse cultural assets are not only sources of identity and pride but also crucial drivers of sustainable development, cohesion, and mutual understanding.
This message lies at the very heart of HER[AI]TAGE. Funded under the Erasmus+ programme, our collaboration operates at a distinctive and pioneering intersection: bringing together intangible cultural heritage, traditional ecological knowledge, and ethical artificial intelligence.
Our mission is not merely to archive the past in static databases, but to encourage active, meaningful, and intergenerational dialogue. By gathering the oral histories, folklore, and environmental wisdom of senior citizens living in the Mura, Drava, and Danube river basins across Croatia, Slovenia, and Serbia, we protect a vital segment of our regional and European identity.
In this process, artificial intelligence is used as a bridge, never a replacement. Through our “human-in-the-loop” methodology, we ensure that digital tools and AI systems serve to amplify authentic human voices rather than dilute them. This synthesis of ancestral ecological wisdom and modern digital innovation empowers local communities, preserves fragile local histories, and offers contemporary society valuable blueprints for environmental sustainability.
On this World Day for Cultural Diversity, let us celebrate the rich mosaic of our regional cultures, honour the wisdom of our elders, and continue using advanced technology as a catalyst for cultural dialogue and preservation.
