In Petrovaradin, there were horses, cows, and geese. Every house that had a vineyard had a horse, and most also had a cow and geese. Chicks were kept in the house. In the morning, before going to the vineyard, the cow would be let out onto the street. The cattle herder, the person who watched the cows, would start from the last house in Petrovaradin, and all the cows would come out. The cows already knew the way and would go to the Petrovaradin meadows, across the railway tracks. So… it was the same with the geese. Someone else herded the geese the same way. Not everyone had geese, but each flock was painted a different color! They painted them somewhere, so they knew whose was whose, and then it would be “this one is mine,” and someone would rip out the painted feather, and you couldn’t tell whose it was. In January, the feathers were plucked and kept. That plucking was called ‘čijanje’.
