As a child, I loved games by the Drava river the most. There were eleven of us, and Dad was a fisherman, so we went fishing. We set up ‘sekere’ (fishing nets) and waited to see if the fish would bite. We didn’t have buckets or bags – we carried the fish on a ‘škraka’, a V-shaped branch. That stuck in my memory. Everything was used: the leftover fish were eaten by cats and birds. I particularly remember when the ‘flojsari’ (rafters) came from Slovenia; that was a real celebration. That doesn’t happen today. The Drava has disappeared, the forests cut down, the backwaters dried up. I feel nostalgia and worry because nature is disappearing, and man is heading in the wrong direction.
