From a young age, I learned how to conserve nature and resources. Water was kept in the ‘zdenac’ (well), always covered to stay clean. In the field, we learned when to plant, how to fertilize, water, and store food. Nothing was thrown away – potatoes, vegetables, ‘kiselina’ (sauerkraut) in barrels, everything was stored for winter. Seeds were especially preserved, in case of disasters. My grandmother used to tell how they saved bean seeds for seven years and thus saved the family when the crops failed. Children were warned about poisonous plants in the forest, and we took it seriously. There were no written calendars – everything was known by the weather and experience. This knowledge was passed down from generation to generation, and I believe it is still preserved, at least in the countryside.
