The Story Behind HER[AI]TAGE
HER[AI]TAGE was inspired by the rich oral traditions woven along the rivers Mura, Drava, and Danube – lifelines of history, culture, and ecological wisdom in Croatia, Slovenia, and Serbia. For centuries, elders in these regions have passed down stories of river life, traditional crafts, and the deep connection between people and nature. These narratives, shared in villages, around kitchen tables, and by the water’s edge, hold a deep sense of identity and belonging. As time moves forward, these voices risk being lost, along with the invaluable knowledge they carry.
The project was born from the need to preserve and revitalise this storytelling tradition, ensuring that the cultural and environmental heritage of the communities does not fade into silence. As oral traditions decline and younger generations become increasingly disconnected from them, technology presents a unique opportunity – not to replace tradition, but to enhance its reach and ensure its survival. HER[AI]TAGE merges artificial intelligence with cultural storytelling, making oral heritage more accessible while respecting its authenticity.
By interviewing the elderly guardians of stories, digitising and archiving transcribed oral histories, transforming those stories into AI-enhanced visual and audio experiences, and equipping educators with tools to integrate technology into heritage education, the project creates a bridge between the past and the future. The motivation behind HER[AI]TAGE is not just to document history but to give it a living, evolving presence. This initiative ensures that the stories of Mura, Drava, and Danube continue to flow – connecting generations, strengthening cultural identity, and showcasing how AI can be used ethically to safeguard the voices, knowledge, and experiences of the past.
